H/T to Scout at First Draft

Thinking about the efforts the federal government is making to rebuild areas damaged by Hurricane Katrina, do you think the federal government is doing too much, is doing the right amount, or has not done enough?

Too Much–10%

Right Amount–33%
Not Enough–52%

Unsure–5%

Too Much–10%

Right Amount–31%

Not Enough–56%

Unsure–3%

According to an August CNN/ Opinion Research Corporation poll…..

So those who are getting on board with Tancredo or whoever, those who find it good fodder for talk radio or mad blogging to say bad things about New Orleans and her people, you are in the ten percent who will turn their backs on the biggest disaster to befall an American city in modern times. You exhibit ignorance on a scale I have seldom seen.

If you choose to live below sea level your house may be flooded. Why do you deserve my tax dollars to rebuild it?

Get flood insurance or move to higher ground. Don’t ask for my money to fix your poor housing choice.

NOLA has been a Democratic (ie corrupt socialist)stronghold for decades. I thought that the people’s government would have solved all their problems by now.

    Hello ten-percenter…

People who had flood insurance are getting screwed.

Many people agree that the lowest lying areas shouldn’t be rebuilt.

If other countries can build working flood control, why can’t the USA?

New Orleans is losing elevation and wetlands because of human interventions on the Mississippi river that benefit everybody.

The coastal wetlands have been shredded to make petroleum transport easier. The MRGO funneled storm surge into the area.

New Orleanians paid their taxes and are citizens of this country. It is one country we live in. New Orleans has been around longer than this country has. We as a nation have received tremendous benefit from the erosion of their hurricane protections.

Pinning everything on the below sea level part is missing most of the issue.

Your blinding, unrealistic cult-like adherence to libertarian principle is cute, but there is too much out there about NOLA for me to try and summarize it all. You say fuck it , everyone for themselves… I disagree. History will not be kind to the way we treated the city.

And yeah, their politicians really suck… that is a problem… but it is not the point here.

And if ya wanna talk corruption, go talk about a fat chunk of the modern Republican party….

Libertarian principles may be cute to you, but you can’t deny the simple logic.

Do you see that your liberal policy goals (healthcare NOLA) and Republican policy goals (Iraq, War On Drugs) are only different sides of the same coin?

The only difference between liberal and conservative policy is that you believe one is right and the other is wrong. You wish that the government would advocate your goals because they appear subjectively “right” to you. The answer for both parties is still more government.

Big government always destroys freedom and leads to market distortions that lead to situations where entire cities are built under sea level.

Instead of empowering Americans to make horrible choices with my tax dollars, instead of complaining about the wrong kind of big government (Iraq War) and wishing for the “right” kind (save NOLA), I advocate for freedom and liberty. Not because it is “cute,” because freedom is all the government can and should guarantee.
