RIP Ashley Morris
It was a year and a few days ago at the NOLA blogger geek dinner that I first met Ashley Morris. I was in town with the First Draft trip trying to do something constructive after Katrina, and the party at dangerblond’s was going full swing. There was this big guy there, a talkative, opinionated, sweaty guy wearing I believe a bright yellow bowling shirt (update: yes, a purple and yellow shirt! Thanks vt)… I had not even been formally introduced, but from the conversation I knew this big guy did not like Houston. At all. I forget which particular issue about Houston he had ranted on (there are so many). Of course, I had to tell him straight away I lived in Houston, just to get a reaction. He sparkled for a moment, appreciating the humor, then said something along the lines of “why would anyone want to live there?” Hey, it was a party.
I met Ashley again last August at the Rising Tide II conference. At the pre-party, he cajoled me a little to send him an e-mail and he would link to my blog. I said “even if I live in Houston?” Damn, did he roll his eyes at that one. I never did get around to sending that e-mail.
I did get to share blogspace with Ashley over at The New Package, where The Wire was discussed until the small group of NuPakers and various hangers-on were blue in the face. Ashley was a true David Simon fan, he really loved that stuff. That was a fun time, a wonderful thing to share. I remember Ashley and Ray wagering over The Wire’s final outcome, the victor to be paid in lap dances at a local strip club. (I think the outcome was a draw… no actual lap dances were had).
- 30 - for Ashley. Rest in Peace.

also, there are pictures of that night at dangerblond’s Flickr page. I saw them not long ago. I think it’s a purple AND yellow shirt.
